Default Analysis Services for dba's? - 12-09-2004 , 07:03 PM

I know this is a silly question so I apologize in advance. Is the
implementation/ configuration/ design/ loading/ etc. of AS typically the
responsibility of a DBA or a Developer of a company? From the perspective
where there is a definate difference between the two roles of course.

Chris
I am both at work and I firmly believe the dba is reposnible for the
management of the databases and servers in terms of optimising and load
balancing.
Develpers typically come up with a schema or ER diagrams and run them by the
dba with a view for any further normalisation etc.

But I get to do both in my case.

Chris

Interesting question that I'd never thought about before. I'm a BI developer
and control all aspects of the OLAP side. Our DBA dosn't touch AS at all,
never had any experience. However, I suppose there is a fair and valid
argument that there should be an AS DBA, but should it be the SQL Server
DBA.... I'm not convinced, DBA's tend to specialise and excel in OLTP
environments and AS is typically NOT OLTP. My view could be swayed by the
fact that I do all the AS stuff and have it purring like a kitten. In my view
if a SQL DBA is to be involved it should only be in the implamentation and
possibly configuration. The design and loading is the simple bit that any of
us humble developers can do.

Thanks for the insights guys. I asked because I'm a dva and want to start
investing spare time in learning something new sql related. For the first
time in 4 years, I logged on to look at job descriptions for sql dba's. It
seems IMHO that 4 years ago dts and olap werent really frequently mentioned
words but now they are. I would assume by olap what is meant is AS, but
can't really be sure. Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

AS is not OLAP. There are many OLAP tools out there that will allow users to
analyse data. AS is one of them and being from MS and free it is becoming the
tool of choice for most people. OLAP tends to go hand in hand with data
warehousing, a slightly different beast than RMDB. It relies more on
denormalised tables than pure normalized tables. If you want to learn more
about OLAP I suggest you have a look at topics such as Business Intelligence/
Information (BI), data warehouses and of course OLAP.

DTS is just the MS ETL tool used to generate the denormalised tables so AS
and other reporting applications can view the business data.

OLAP and BI have been growing markets for the past 10 years but only in the
last 4 – 5 years (since MS entered the market) has it started to become a
very popular thing to do. In more and more companies it is becoming business
critical.

Chris,

If you're diving into DTS and OLAP for SQL Server, keep an eye on the
new features of SQL Server 2005 (now in Beta 2), since this a point
where you can "leapfrog" SQL 2000 technology to some extent. Some links
to look at:
