Default Analysis Services 2005, msmdpump, and compression - 04-05-2006 , 02:31 PM

We have been unable to get result set compression working for
connections to Analysis Services 2005 that use the HTTP bridge
(msmdpump.dll). According to this post:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/Sho...68598&SiteID=1

This appears to be a known problem with Analysis Services itself. Is
this actually the case? Also, is there any way to work around it until
SP1 is released, say by enabling HTTP compression in IIS (6.0)? I've
read some newsgroup posts which would suggest that enabling HTTP
compression has a beneficial impact on performance for XML/A traffic,
but I'm not sure whether or not the PTS 9 provider supports it.

Thanks,
Nate Kohari

There is a hotfix available to enable compression over HTTP for the OLE DB
provider. But its probably easier to just wait for SP1 which should be
available in the near future.

The issue is this:
- IIS supports dynamic compression but will only turn it on if the client
sends a HTTP header that it accepts compressed results.
- The OLE DB provider uses the WinHttp stack which does not supported
reading compressed data.

The hotfix and SP1 do not enable IIS compression -- instead they allow the
compression code that is built into Analysis Services for the TCP transport
to be negotiated over the HTTP transport also.

Thanks,
Akshai

Akshai,

Thanks for your reply. It's good to hear that there is a hotfix; we
will try to get our hands on it to test in the meantime before SP1 is
released. Do you by chance know an approximate date when SP1 will be
available?

Thanks again,
Nate

A related question: is this fix applied in the March CTP of SP1? We'd
like to install it in a test environment so we can estimate the
performance of our system across HTTP.

Thanks,
Nate

Yes, the fix is in the March CTP. SP1 should be available very soon but I
don't have a specific date.

Thanks,
Akshai
