Default Aggregation Usage question - 10-14-2005 , 03:05 AM

hi,
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...cspg.mspx#ENAA
It refers to dimension's Aggregation Usage property and Top and Bottom
Levels is the default setting for changing dimensions (like parent-child
dimensions).

I open my Cube Editor and found all my shared parent-child dimension's
Aggregation Usage is Standard else Top and Bottom Levels.

Does it mean Standard equals to Top and Bottom Levels in my parent-child
dimension ?

TIA.

Parent-child dimensions are a very special case when it comes to
aggregations. AS2000 does not store any aggregations for parent-child
dimensions. Data for any non-leaf member in a P-C dimension is aggregated at
query time.

Yes, it does. You can turn off the top or bottom level, but you cannot
turn on aggregations for any of the intermediate levels.

Any "changing" dimensions (virtual, rolap and parent-child are all
inherently changing) achieve their changeable nature by not storing any
aggregations between to the top and bottom levels. This means they take
a performance hit as the cost of their flexibility.

Are you saying that aggregations are stored for the top level in a
parent-child dimension? I always thought that no aggregations were stored,
including the top level, but I haven't checked.

There are two types of aggregations: rigid and flex. Rigid aggs (like the
top and bottom levels of a PC dimension) can always be aggregated. It is
part of their nature as a rigid aggregation. Flex aggs are different.
Intermediate aggs in a PC dimension are flex and they cannot be
pre-calculated. They can however be cached and re-used from earlier queries.

Also note that the top level is the "All" member by default.
