Default About "Actions" - 04-07-2004 , 10:46 PM

Hi! I am a beginner of using OLAP cube. I found that there is a folder called "Actions" in cube editor. I would like to know what is the use of "Actions". When I try Actions Wizard, it requires me to choose the action type. Even though i have read "help", I still don't understand. Can anyone give me some examples or codes to illustrate and build the action type? If I use Excel as a front-end, how can I display "Actions" in Excel? Thanks

They are server-formulated, client-executed, context sensitive commands.
(Hard to explain.) No, Excel doesn't support Actions.

Tom,

Can you suggest some websites or books which are related to this topic?
Thanks!

Sue

Actions are links to information. The links may be to Web pages, spreadsheets, special reports, or even other applications. A common use of an action that I have seen is to visit another website and pass a parameter on the URL where the parameter was obtained in context of a member, or position, in a cube. An example would be a cube that has a product dimension and an action related to the product SKU which is the leaf level member in the dimension. The action associated with the member goes to a website and uses the product SKU as a parameter. The SKU parameter forces the website to bring up more detailed information about the SKU. So, the action implementation in this case allows the user to get more detailed information about a particular SKU

Here’s a link to an article from SQL Server Magazine. It’s a thorough overview of actions and has some good examples and some sample code. I recommend reading the complete article. It’s written by Russ Whitney who’s the R&D manager for ProClarity Corp. They make a pretty good tool that allows the user to utilize actions – unlike Excel which does not allow the user to utilize actions

I'm pretty sure i have seem some add on coding examples of actions used with
either excel or
the owc web component (perhaps it was the web component toolpack ?).

Not sure which though.

Actions can also be rowsets .. havent' quite comprehended the use for this
myself though.
