Default 2005 Analysis Services and End User Access - 10-05-2005 , 07:33 AM

We are looking at using the new Analysis Services to Build a Cube to allow
the business to analyse data. It looks great and I have looked at this and
the 2005 Reporting Services via webcasts but I am missing a piece in the
puzzle please.

You can access a UDM/Cube from the new ad-hoc Report Builder for End Users
to create Reports but what tools do you use for them to gain access to the
Cube and drill down etc.. without writing a whole application for them? Do
they use Analytical Services and have to create their own project and hook in
that way or how do they hook in from EXCEL or something else??

Thanks very much.

Users can certainly connect to AS 2005 cubes via Excel; but only the
next version (Office 12, Beta likely late this year) will specifically
support new AS 2005 features like KPI's. Some of the 3rd-party OLAP
client tools will support AS 2005-specific features sooner. Mosha's
MSOLAP info pages provide a list of Analysis Services client software:

Deepak, I am having issues connecting using Olap 9 driver to my AS 2005
cubes?! I keep getting an Excel initialisation error when using this? Any
ideas?

Which versions of Excel, and of the OLAP 9 driver, are you using?
Personally, I've only tested a couple of combinations, but others may
have more info.

Hi Deepak,

I am using Excel 2003 (no service pack) and PTS version: 9.0.1314.0
(msolap90.dll). What is odd is after pressing OK to the "error in transport
layer" I follow the dialogue to connect to my olap server and I can then
access the data through Excel!? Any help much appreciated although I
appreciate the number of variables is large!!!

Many Thanks

Right I have fixed this issue in two stages:

First as mentioned before I had to regsrv32 the MSOLAP090.dll even after
installing the September CTP client tools.

Secondly the transport error was due to security and my client user logon
not having permissions on the AS 2005 server!
