Default 16k/64k limit - 09-16-2005 , 12:40 PM

hey i've seen the 64k limit firsthand; i was talking to him about it
and he was like 'didnt they fix that in a service pack'

it's totally still a limit right?

is it gone in SQL 2005?

its a limit which is related to the kernel of the product, no any SP will
not allow you to bypass this.
you have to create an internediate level in the dimension.

From my knowledge of 2005, the limit is out.

Yes, the 64k limit on the number of children of any one member of a
dimension is definitely gone. In theory, you can now have upto 2 billion
children under a member, although most client tools would choke before
they even reached the old 64k limit.

FYI - most of the limits in the 2005 product are based around the 32 bit
integers so you can have a bit over 2 billion of most things!

That's right, you can actually have 2 billion of most things, Cubes in a
database, Dimensions in a cube... etc.

It's not just the limits that have been raised in AS2k5, there is the
new UDM (Unified Dimensional Model), attributes (kind of like member
properties) are now first class objects and heaps of other new things.

If you have not started reading about AS2k5 yet you really should, it's
going to be a big learning curve, but it's going to be worth it.
