Default Upgrading DTS to SSIS - 05-25-2006 , 03:07 AM

We collect data daily from 300 branches via DTS.

Each branch connects to our server and uploads their data into our server by
running a DTS package that is on the server. They can do this, because each
branch has the (free) MSDE database installed, which includes DTS.dll and
this allows them to download the DTS package from the server and then run it
locally.

As we are upgrading to SQL Server 2005, we are considering replacing all the
DTS packages with SSIS packages. Will we still be able to run these SSIS
packages from each of the 300 branches without them all having to get a SQL
Server 2005 license ?

If that is possible, what do we need to do at the branch ? Do we install SQL
Server Express ? Or can we just install the SSIS component (like dts.dll for
DTS) ?

Thanks,
Craig

Hello Craig,

I am no licencing expert but here is an extract from BOL. Remember SSIS
is very different in Shape and purpose to DTS

You cannot run packages outside of BI Development Studio on a client computer
that does not have Integration Services installed, and the terms of your
SQL Server 2005 licensing may not permit you to install Integration Services
on additional computers. SQL Server 2005 Integration Services (SSIS) is now
a server component and is not redistributable to client computers in the
same manner that the components required for SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation
Services (DTS) were redistributable.

To run packages from a client computer that does not have Integration Services
installed, you need to launch them in a manner that ensures that the packages
run on the server.

Thanks, Alan. Looks like I'll be sticking to DTS, then.
