Default Ten things I would like in the next version of DTS Designer - 01-23-2004 , 10:35 AM

1. A Package Object Browser that truly allows you to browse objects to
the same degree as disconnected edit. It is a real pain to have to
jump out of an ActiveX script editor to check properties and values.

2. Speaking of the ActiveX script editor, it sucks. It needs to have
the features of an IDE or at least allow a plugin third party editor.
I mean, you can't even search the code.

3. A way to select, cut and paste groups of tasks and connections.
Doing 'em one at at time don't cut it, especially considering that
there's no way to copy data pumps at all, which are the worst PITA to
configure in the first place.

4. Some way to browse data concurrently with the process for setting
up transformations.

5. A way to name columns as you define the column positions of a text
data source.

6. Some way to align and space objects. Obsessive type that I am, I
want all the little icons to line up neatly and it is real tedious to
try to align them manually. This is so basic I can't believe it's not
in Designer already.

7. One thing I like about the DTS Designer paradigm is that it uses
aspects of a data flow chart combined with aspects of a process flow
chart to provide precedence. It would be nice if it could provide more
functionality for the design process so that it would be easier to lay
out the data flow without having to implement it at the same time.
Along with this, there needs to be a graphical way to lay out loops,
because the the way you have to do it now programmatically is tedious
and breaks the visual programming paradigm of DTS Designer.

8. A way to export graphics and a way to report on objects and
properties.

9. Add a "Cancel" button to the "Do you want to save the changes
(etc.)?" dialog box. I have been screwed more than once trying to make
a choice between "Yes" and "No". As with all development tools there
should also be an autosave feature.

10. Fix the "cancelled by user" error.

I like your last point <grin>

seriously though.

If you want to see things in SQL Server than use sqlwish (AT) microsoft (DOT) com I
KNOW they read these mails and they get to the right people. Recently the
MVPs were beaten up by a PM about it so we know they listen.

JP,

Many of the points you list have been addressed, and some are no longer
relevant. You might like to take a look at this -

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...technet/prodte
chnol/sql/next/SQLSBDTS.asp

This document isn't exhaustive, but as you should see Dts has changed
somewhat. It isn't just a upgrade, with fixes and some new
functionality, it is a total re-write. Revolutionary not evolutionary.

As Allan said, sqlwish is the place to send requests like this.
