Default SQL 2005 – Import from Sybase 12.5 - 12-09-2005 , 02:03 PM

Hi

I’m new in SQL 2005 and hope for some advice.

I want to import some data from Sybase 12.5 into SQL Server 2005. It’s about
10 tables, and 2 tables have about 1 mill records each. After that I want to
import every new and updated record once a day.

Is there anybody who has any advice for me?

From the sql database:
Right click/Task/Import data/ chosse the sybase data source (Sybase ASE
oledb provider), click properties, enter your data source (name of ids file)
and user/password (test connection), NEXT, destination is the SQL DB, NEXT,
Copy data from more tables or views, you will have the complete schemas of
your syb db on the left side, select your tables (you have the choice of
modifying tables creation), NEXT, in the windows save and execute package
you click on save SSIS package (select a file or on sql server), then click
on finish.
You might have error messages regarding code page that could not be
retrieved from the sybase driver ( I also play around Oracle and I have the
same problem). It will use a default code page.
One thing that is important, the keys/constraint are not transfered, if
someone knows how to transfer tables (like using the old import/export
objects with sql 2000) including object such as views, triggers or primary
keys, I'd be glad to know.

Thanks Wilfrid

Your recommendations work very well. I got the error regarding code page,
but that’s ok so far.

My next challenge now is to transfer every new, updated and deleted record.
Do you have any suggestion? Do I have to use triggers on the Sybase database
to track every new, updated and deleted records? Or can SQL 2005 handle this?
