Default Problem setting up Oracle -> SQL dts task - 03-06-2006 , 09:37 AM

I've set up a PC that is to act as a DTS engine to pull data out of an
Oracle server & pump it into a database under SQL 2000. I've done it this
way, rather than using the SQL Server itself because I don't want to install
the Oracle client software onto the server.

I've created the DTS package with the Oracle connection, the SQL connection
and a Transform Data Task between the two. My problem is that if I
right-click on the transform data task, the user interface just hangs. I've
tried using both the ODBC and OLE DB Oracle connectoids, but to no avail.

I've checked that the Oracle client software is able to communicate with the
Oracle server, and it is.

Any suggestions?

--Philip

Hello Philip,

Please check if you create a odbc DSN to oracle on the server, can you
access Oracle server properly via ODBC connection using MS odbc driver for
Oracle?

You may want to install the latest Oracle client to test the situation:

220915.KB.EN-US PRB: SQL Distributed Query with Oracle Needs Oracle Client
and
http://support.microsoft.com/default...B;EN-US;220915

In addition, you may want to reinstall MDAC on the server by right clicking
%windir%\mdac.inf->Install. You will be prompted to insert Win2003 SP1
setup CD.

Since it is a hang issue, to find out the root cause of this issue we may
need to analyze memory dumps, this work has to be done by contacting
Microsoft Product Support Services. Therefore, we probably will not be able
to resolve the issue through the newsgroups. I recommend that you open a
Support incident with Microsoft Product Support Services so that a
dedicated Support Professional can assist with this case. If you need any
help in this regard, please let me know.

Peter

Just to clarify - I'm running the enterprise manager on an XP PC. My
intention is to pull the data from Oracle and push it to MS SQL. Do I still
need to make changes on the SQL Server as your posting suggests?

Thanks.

Peter

Do you mean that Oracle client is necessary on the SQL server itself? In
other words, I can't do this with just an intermediary PC?

On the intermediary PC, I cannot update MDAC as it is already on the latest
version. I've installed SQL SP4 to be on the safe side and that hasn't made
any difference.

Hello Philip,

Based on my scope, I think Oracle client shall be installed on SQL server
though you use MS OLEDB provider for oracle.

X-Tomcat-NG: microsoft.public.sqlserver.dts

I've set up a PC that is to act as a DTS engine to pull data out of an
Oracle server & pump it into a database under SQL 2000. I've done it
this
way, rather than using the SQL Server itself because I don't want to
install
the Oracle client software onto the server.

I've created the DTS package with the Oracle connection, the SQL
connection
and a Transform Data Task between the two. My problem is that if I
right-click on the transform data task, the user interface just hangs.
I've
tried using both the ODBC and OLE DB Oracle connectoids, but to no
avail.

I've checked that the Oracle client software is able to communicate
with
the
Oracle server, and it is.

Any suggestions?
