Default new ssis is not as good as DTS - 03-07-2006 , 10:23 AM

Hi,

I am fairly dissapointed with the new SSIS. I've been trying to insert a csv
file into sql server and had many problems. OK, the file is not 2-3 columns
with 5-10 rows but if that was DTS it would have worked the first time I
tried!!
It seems that Microsoft have lost their magic creating intuitive software!

OK, I've got some problems with the length. The problem is I am not quite
sure if the changes I am making make any sense. There is a the advanced edit
in the flat file source which gives you the Flat File Source Output with
external columns and output columns. Now do I need to modify the length in
both for a particular entry or just one? or elsewhere as well?

Then once I did it in both and the length was altered then I get a message
about metadata. Anyone knows what this is? I tried deleting the link and
re-creating it but didn't make much difference.

In summary does anybody know what steps are needed in order to change the
length of fields? Does anybody have a link where it explains the steps for
flat file source entry? Also does anybody know how ssis decides the length?
cause it gets it wrong. Thanks very much.

Panos

I couldn't disagree with you more. The only bad thing I've noticed
about SSIS so far, is that it is so different, the learning curve was a
little more than expected.

If you're only going to do one import, then just use the import/export
wizard - this creates a package behind the scenes for you, but you
don't have to do all the config. work. Browse to the applicabe
database in SSMS, right click, choose Tasks, then Import Data... This
will be more straightforward than trying to do something in BIDS. I
think it may even give you an option to save the package at the end of
the wizard.

Hello Panos Stavroulis.,

It sounds as though you have gone into the advanced editor for the falt file
source adapter. That is very definitely where you do not want to be. Have
a look at the connection manager that is associated with the file. You can
ind the columns lengths and other info in there.

I must say I take it back!! After playing with it for another few hours I got
the hang of it and it seems to behave as well as DTS if not better!!

Thanks both for your comments
