Default Importing Fixed Width Files with Multiple Occurrences - 04-21-2008 , 12:22 PM

Hello, can someone please tell me how to set up flat file connection object
when the format of the file is as follows:

Date Record(s) - Fixed Format Assumed Decimal

Starting
Field Name Occurs Position Length Dec.
Format
---------- ------ -------- ------
---- ------

FIELD1 1 1 4
0 ccyy

FIELD2 1 5 8
- DATE

FIELD3 1 13 36
- TEXT

FIELD4 265 49 8
0 ccyymmdd

I believe set the delimeter to "Fixed Width", and then manually set each
field length based on the above specification. However, Is there an easier
way to set up Field4 rather than manually creating 265 fields with a length
of 8 characters in the connection object UI?

I can't seem to find an easy way of setting up this flat file connection
object.

Thanks for your help!

Jason

Hi Jason,
I am not sure of your meaning of creating 265 fields with a length of 8
characters in the connection object UI. You can define columns and columns
length by clicking the ruler to make markers and dragging the markers to
set each column length. You can find it at Columns pane in your Flat File
Connection Manager Editor. The operation is convenient per my experiences.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions or
concerns. Have a nice day!

Hi Jason,

If I understand your question correctly, you have a file with 3
columns (fixed width FIELD1 - 3 above) followed by 265 date columns
(ccyymmdd format). Please correct me if my understanding is
incorrect.

If my understanding is correct, I would recommend you set the columns
in the file source.

Another option would be to set the first 3 columns and then lump all
the dates into a 4th very wide column. This 4th column could then be
split by a script transformation into the 265 date columns.

Either way you can't get around the creation of the 265 columns
somewhere in your SSIS package (metadata inside a data flow cannot by
dynamically created), so you might as well do it at the source.

Good luck!
J
