this name is used anywhere - in scripting, logs and
i wonder that there's no obvious way to set it
for dts task/step in dts designer.

anybody knows solution?

You can edit the name of the task in "Disconnected Edit" but it is used in
mutiple locations and you could get caught out if you miss one of these
locations and the package becomes corrupted.

Why do MS not expose the name of the task to us so we can change it?

Well I would imagine it is because of this exact same reason.

Imagine we have a huge package with lots of tasks going from everywhere and
workflow constraints going from here to there also.
If you could see the name of the task/step then when you changed the name of
it DTS would have to change every associated thing as well which may be a
nightmare.
