Default EM crashes on open DTS package for Design No error - 11-01-2006 , 10:54 AM

Gurus,

Whenever I try to modify an existing DTS package on SQL 2000 SP4 the
Package does not open and Enterprise Manager closes after a brief
pause. There is no error is reported, either via pop up or in the
event log. I can't edit any DTS packages on this machine. Can anyone
offer any advice?

Chris

The first thing I would do is uninstall/reinstall - have you done that ?
Checked the machines event logs ?
Run DTSWiz.exe from cmd line ? - Not really helpful but may display an error..
Installed a lower Sp and tested ?
Tried another machine ?
Tried it from the Server console ?

Do you have an FTP or custom task in the DTS package? I had the same problem that started after the October patches
were installed. The XML patch may have done it. The cause was a DLL on my client machine did not match the one on the
server. It was a newer version.

I had version 2000.85.1054.0 of C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\custtask.dll
I restored version 2000.80.760.0 and everything worked again. Note: EM opens the DLL, so you have to close EM in order
to replace the file.

The most annoying part was that I had saved some packages while the 85.1054 version was on my PC. After restoring the
80.760 version, I could not open these. I had to put back the 85.1054 version, open the packages, remove the FTP tasks
and save the packages. I then had to restore the 80.760 version, open the packages again, put back the FTP task and
save once more. Thanks Microsoft!

Ed
