Default DTS and Yukon? - 11-19-2003 , 01:24 PM

Is there any published information on the features of DTS in Yukon?

I get the impression that there are some significant enhancements.

You get the right feelings. There are a huge amount. It is a complete
rewrite.

You can find out more here

Thanks Allan,

A complete re-write does constitute a major change. I have a couple of
questions.

1. What happens with existing DTS Packages (from SQL 2000)? Can they be
executed as they are? Can they be edited? Can they be upgraded?

2. I have only had a very brief glimpse of BizTalk (a few months ago) but
the data moving/transformation part of it looked a lot like it might be a
new version of DTS. The information on these pages seems to confirm that
impression. I am correct, or does BizTalk use different technology?

Thanks,

Dick Campbell

1/ 2000 Packages will continue to run(we will ship the old binaries for
compat), we will provide an upgrade wizard that makes best effort to upgrade
old packages to new packages. They can not be edited in the new environment.

2/ DTS and Biztalk currently use different technologies but there are
obvious similarities.

Dick.

I believe MS are also going to ship a wrapper for executing 2000 packages
"AS IS". This is the option I will be choosing to use my 2000 packages.
You will still be able to play with them in the 2000 Designer. Yukon is
such a major enhancement of the ETL process that some things would be easier
to be rewritten. A lot of the cobbling together we do nowadays simply will
not be necessary in Yukon.
