Default DTS to SSIS - 03-03-2006 , 05:03 AM

Hi,

I have been reading through various web sites about the upgrade from DTS to
SSIS and I am more confused then when I started, it could be the Friday thing
or I am just reading the wrong sites. I am after some very basics about SSIS
what all these tabs are in Microsoft Visual Studion, some sort of reference
to how these are similar to things in DTS packs would be good, although I
have read that to create things in SSIS you should forget everything you know
about DTS. I expecially want to upgrade DTS packs to SSIS, I have read that
this is done by using the Migration option, which I did but now I cant seem
to find where I have migrated it to. I am running both 2000 and 2005 as 2
instances, so I can take my time moving things over, but really need
somewhere to start.

My thanks to anyone that can help, P

Hello Phil,

SSIS is incredibly different to DTS. Upgrade? There is the migration wizard
but to be hinest I am not sure you need to "Upgrade"

SSIS has the ability to execute 2K packages with the DTS runtime (install it)
SQL Server 2K5 has the ability to edit, in the 2K designer, 2K packages from
2K5.

The migration wizard cannot do a 100% job period.

I personally will be recreating rather than migrating.

Phil,

Allan did not tell you (out of modesty I presume) but what you really need
is his book on "Professional SQL Server 2005 Integration Services" that just
came out (from Wrox.)

I was in your situation two months ago and I am now adding custom components
to SSIS no small thanks to his book.
