Default DTS License - 09-10-2003 , 04:02 PM

We are using DTS package to upload data into Oracle DB
server. Do we need any kind of MS SQL server license to
use DTS component.

Thanks in advance,
- Manish

Manish,

as long as your DTS packages aren't connecting to SQL Server, you don't need
additional SQL Server Client Access Licenses (CALs) to develop and
subsequently deploy your DTS applications. The DTS runtimes are free.
Therefore, in a standalone environment, where SQL Server or the client tools
aren't present, you need only the appropriate licensing for your database.
For example, if you use DTS to build a replication utility that moves data
between an Oracle and an Informix server, you need only Oracle and Informix
client licenses.

kind regards

It is always best to check with your reseller but AFAIK

If DTS is purely a medium to move data between A and B and neither of those
are SQL Server.

You will need an installation licence to put SQL Server on a Server. DTS is
a client tool but you are not going to be using it to be a client to SQL
Server are you? so it may be you just need the Server licence + 1 cal.

I would as said earlier speak to my reseller.

I believe Frank is wrong, but Allan says check with MS directly.

Redist.txt appears to cover the redistribution rights, of components
including DTS, and whilst you get "Microsoft grants you the
non-exclusive, royalty-free right to reproduce and distribute the
Redistributable Components" the end of that sentence states some
clauses, including " in the Application, the Redistributable Components
only operate in conjunction with Microsoft SQL Server and any other
Microsoft products;"

It could be...but:
I think that "and any other Microsoft products;" is the important part of
that sentence.
He really should check with Microsoft...might be better.

"He really should check with Microsoft" I definitely agree. Unless you are a
lawyer trained in licensing agreements, then ask! And ask more than once
as you will probably get a different answer each time.
