Default DTS and Enterprize manager using MSDE and MSDN professional? - 10-21-2004 , 04:29 AM

Hi,

Can I use Enterprize manager and DTS when I only have a professional MSDN
subscription?

I can't find information about that, and I can't find out how to find/start
Enterprize manager.

TIA
/Daniel

You CAN, but only if you own a license for a product that comes with EM.
For example, if you own SQL Server (Standard), it comes with EM and you can
use the EM to work with MSDE or any other SQL Server product. You cannot
just get EM separately and install it and use it (at least that is what I
have found....if you find different, let me know). EM only comes with SQL
Server Standard or higher (developer has it, which you might have somewhere
if you have a subscription).

To put it simply, EM only comes bundled with some flavour of SQL Server.
MSDE is too stripped down and doesn't include the MSDE so you are up a creek
as it comes to EM. Now there are several free-bees you can try one being
the Web Matrix that has an interface to edit databases and you can get it
at:

http://www.asp.net/webmatrix/download.aspx?tabindex=4

Additionally, there is a IIS version that you can use if you have a machine
with IIS. It is a set of web pages to edit SQL Servers. It is called "SQL
Server Web Data Administrator" and it is at the following location:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

or just search http://www.microsoft.com for it.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a free DTS designer yet. Best bet is to get
EM.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the reply. This explains why I've had such problems.

Unfortunately I don't have any SQL Server product that would get me EM.
I will look into the links you supplied.

Perhaps I have to use an XML solution to my import/export needs instead...

But thanks a lot for the help!

If you look around, I've seen code to actually create DTS packages
programmatically and run them programmatically if you want to go that route.
I think the problem is the actual DTS Task DLLs. I don't recall if
Microsoft includes them with the MSDE or not. I've always installed the
MSDE or some other version and then install the EM from a licensed product
and used it. So I'm not sure which of the two includes those DLLs. I'm
assuming it would be the SQL Server product not EM, but I'm not sure because
I've never tried it with just the MSDE installed.

There might be a third party tool to create DTS packages from some person in
the same boat as you, but I doubt if it would be free. I've seen newsgroup
messages about just such a thing, but have never seen a link or actual
program to speak of, simple or complex.
