Default DTS Designer Error: The system cannot find the file specified - 08-22-2005 , 11:02 AM

I have started receiving the following error whenever I try to open an
existing DTS package or create a new one: The system cannot find the
file specified. I can continue to open the DTS package, but the Task
pane is completely empty. Hence, I cannot add-to or create any
packages. I am running SQL 2000 SP3A Developer Edition on my computer.

The problem appeared suddenly last week. Up until that point, I had
been able to create and edit packages at will. I have seen several
postings related to incompatibilities between SQL 7 and SQL 2000 DTS
packages, but that does not fit my situation. I have also seen
suggestions to re-register the DTS DLLs, but that has not helped
either. In fact, I've completely uninstalled and re-installed SQL and
the errors persist.

I did have the June CTP of SQL 2005 installed for a short time, but I
did not experience any problems until several weeks after I performed
that install. I have since uninstalled SQL 2005 (when I uninstalled
2000), but the problems remain.

Finally, I have tried to monitor the OS using FileMon from
SysInternals, but I can't seem to track down what file the DTS designer
is attempting to locate.

Any help on this matter would be GREATLY appreciated.

Mike:

Does it tell you the name of the file missing?

Additionally, how are you looking with FileMon? It can give a glut of
information if you don't tell it what to look for. I usually stop it from
monitoring and clear the log. Then I get the console right up to right
before getting the error message. Then I filter on mmc.exe and start the
monitoring. Then I generate the error, clear the error dialog, and stop
monitoring. Read the limited results you get, especially the "Result"
column looking for anything abnormal (errors).

To me is sounds like an error ACL or maybe a registry entry that got changed
improperly. Had a similar problem myself and FileMon found the issue and I
was able to fix it.

Thanks for the quick response.

Unfortunately, the DTS Designer isn't telling me the name of the
missing file.
That's actually exactly how I've been using FileMon. The only file
that came up with a "NOT FOUND" error was MSDART.dll. The first check
was in Common FIles\system\ole db. A second check found it in
SYSTEM32. Just to be sure it wasn't causing a problem, I copied it to
ole db. I got rid of the NOT FOUND FileMon error, but DTS Designer is
still giving me the error.

Mike:

What exact sequence of events causes the error? I'm assuming it is as
follows:

1. Open up Enterprise Manager.
2. Navigate to Console Root|Microsoft SQL Servers|SQL Server
Group|[ServerName]|Data Transformation Services
3. Right click on Data Transaformation Services and choose "New Package"
4. Error

Is that correct?

Mike:

As an after thought, have you also tried RegMon? See if you can find any
problems that way. Could be a generic error and might be triggered by a
null/blank/missing value from the registry. You can also do FileMon on a
machine that does work and compare to the FileMon on your machine to see if
the two differ in any way. I'd send you the entire log, but it is about
2500 lines (you might see less as I have several custom tasks that we have
written loading) just for a New Package click. Below is a list of files
mine hits using a filter of "mmc.exe" and started right before clicking New
Package and closed right after the Package opened:

stardds.dll
dtsui.dll
dtsui.RLL
atl.dll
--User specific file--
mmc.exe
custtask.dll
dtspkg.dll
--CUSTOM TASK FILE--
mscoree.dll
cdwtasks.dll
custtask.RLL
--CUSTOM TASK FILE--
cdwtasks.RLL
dtsffile.dll
kernel32.dll
dtsffile.RLL
dtspump.dll
dtspump.RLL
oledb32.dll
MSDART.DLL
OLEDB32R.DLL
msadce.dll
msadcer.dll
MSTORDB.EXE
sqloledb.dll
msisam11.dll
MSDMINE.DLL
msadds.dll
msemp.dll
activeds.dll
msolap80.dll
msdaipp.dll
msdasql.dll
MSUSP.DLL
msjetoledb40.dll
msdaosp.dll
msdaora.dll
query.dll
mdt2dd.dll
mdt2fw.DLL
mdt2fw95.dll
mdt2df.dll
SXS.DLL
STDOLE2.TLB
mdt2dfENU.DLL
mdt2dfX.DLL
mdt2gddr.dll

P.S. What is the last line in the FileMon log WHILE the error dialog is
still up?

Scott,
Thanks for all the help, but I think I've tried just about everything
you've mentioned so far. RegMon is providing so much information that
it's very difficult to gain anything meaningful from it.

Up until the point where the error dialog is displayed, the files that
are being accessed are (all successfully):
atl.dll
dtsui.dll
dtsui.rll
mmc.exe
msdart.dll
msimtf.dll
oledb32.dll
oledb32r.dll

The last line while the error dialog is still displayed is:
CLOSE C:\Program Files\Common Files\system\ole db\OLEDB32R
stardds.dll SUCCESS

At this point I'm trying to set up a Virtual PC with a clean image so
that I can do some DTS designer work.

Mike
