Default Copy database wizard issues - 11-21-2006 , 12:11 AM

I am a newbie DBA. That being said, here is what I am running into trying to
use the "Copy Database Wizard (CDW)". Yes, I have read that I can use backup
and restore, attach/detach but I would like to know why this approach didn't
work. Here is the scenario:

Source server: windows server 2000, sql server 7
destination server: windows server 2003, sql server 2000

"Copy database wizard" will copy the logins and then it gives us the message
that it can't copy the database to the destination, with the error message
below:
----------------
Step Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) Package
Step Error Description:Unspecified error

Step Error code: 80004005
Step Error Help File:sqldts80.hlp
Step Error Help Context ID:1100

When errors are raised while working with Data Transformation Services (DTS)
packages in the DTS Designer on computers with localized versions of SQL
Server 2000 or where the Microsoft Windows operating system has been
localized, a -2147467259 error code and a generic, localized "Unspecified
error" are displayed, instead of the actual error (SP1 fixed this problem).

We applied SP4 to sql server 2000 but this didn't fix this bug (BUG #:
235377, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301579/EN-US/#top). My question is
why didn't the bug fix cure the problem? SP4 should have created a "MORE
INFO>>>" button on the GUI where the above error message is displayed, so
that we would get a more specific error (something like, "Failed to create
the share OMWWIZD") to figure out why the database isn't being copied.

-----------------------------
Please let me know if I haven't posted enough information :-)

Thanks,

kak37

Hello kak37,

80004005 is a generic message but most often associated with permissions
or missing/inaccessible resources.

Failed to create the share OMWWIZD can be found here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/274463
