Default Connection to Oracle - 09-27-2006 , 06:56 AM

This is a newbie question.

I'm starting a new DTS package. I click and drag the Microsoft ODBC drive
for Oracle to the IDE. I enter the inforamtion and click okay.

I received this error dialog box:

Title = Package Error

Text area

Error Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Driver

Error Description: [Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]

What does this mean? This is all the information that is displayed.

Oracle is 9i (I think) and SQL 2000 using Windows XP, local PC

Another question: I was looking at a production server for insight into the
problem. I did not find a tnsnames file on teh production server. What
other methods may be used to establish a connection?

You'll need to install the Oracle client on the server.
You can find some additional information on configuring this
in the following article:

database in SQL Server

It appears that the problem is with the ODBC drivers from Oracle 8i. I
installed Oracle 9i Client on a PC and it was able to make the connection.
The SQL Server has Oracle 8i Client.

Is there an Oracle 8i ODBC upgrade?

That driver might just be too old - 8i is considered old in
the Oracle world. I thought it was on the desupport list.
I know the 8i drivers haven't been available for download
for awhile. Did you check for issues on Oracle technet?
http://www.oracle.com/technology/index.html
I'd probably just stick with the 9i driver if it's working.
