Default 2000 DTS Designer Components on 2005 - 02-06-2006 , 08:46 PM

This is why I never recommend to anyone to upgrade to the first release of
Microsoft's products. The "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer
Components" (SQLServer2005_DTS.msi - 5083 KB) that is included in the Nov
2005 Feature Pack for SQL Server 2005 does not work as documented.
Theoretically, installing this file will allow you to edit "old" DTS packages
in SQL Server 2005 - but after performing this install multiple times on
several clients and servers and searching microsoft's site for an answer -
alas there is none. And I gather other folks in these groups are having the
same issue. If anyone from MSFT can offer some guidance on this "issue" it
would be greatly appreciated as I am going to have to recommend to my clients
that they wait several months until all these "features" work themselves
out...

After scouring the web I found something that helps with this problem and I
have answered my own quesion (and subsequently, looking at the MSFT KB
article on this issue, this "fix" is included there -it's just not very
obvious or written clearly).

You need to install BOTH the "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer
Components" and the "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility
Components" that are included in the Nov 2005 Feature Pack for SQL Server
2005. Install both of these on the server, then reboot, and you should be
OK. The KB article should be clearer about this...

And FYI - I can only edit the old DTS packages on the server. I still
cannot edit packages from a client machine (even after installing both files).

And I'm still nervous about upgrading so soon. Anyone have any success or
failure stories with regards to upgrading so soon?
