Default What are the basic requirements for clustering? - 12-04-2003 , 12:30 PM

I am currently working as a DBA and am interestered in
learning about Clustering. I can't use the systems at my
work place to implement and test it out as I am doing it
upon my perosonal interest. Can I implement clustering
using my home computer? Do I need to have multiple CPU's
to do it? Please pass me on some information.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

You need Enterprise-level hardware and software to do it. Likely, you don't
have this at home. The number of CPU's doesn't matter.

You just have to need the hardware and software license.
If you have all this, then see link

Yes, you can easily create a Windows cluster at home using
either two PCs or a single PC running VMWare to create two
virtual machines.

You do need to run Windows 2000 Advanced Server or
Datacenter Server. I doubt you can run the latter on your
home PC. You could also use Windows 2003 Enterprise
Edition. To cluster SQL2000, you need to run SQL Server
2000 Enterprise Edition or Developer Edition.

If you use two pCs, you should also have an external SCSI
disk that connects to both PCs. For serious use, you need
to make sure that your cluster hardware as whole is on the
Microsoft hardwre compatibility list.
