Default 'Virtual Server' option not available when installing SQL2000 on Win2003 - 04-14-2004 , 09:46 AM

I have a 2-node cluster working properly and have setup a pipe name
alias for the virtual server instance (as per KB article Q815431).
When I start the install of SQL 2000, the second screen that allows
you to choose Local, Remote or Virtual Server has the Virtual Server
option greyed out. Am I missing something?

Thanks! - Craig

Do you have a cluster-wide MSDTC installation?

Never mind. I was trying to install SQL 2000 Standard and just found
out that it does not support clustering. I'm off to get the EE
version.

I do not think that it will solve your problem. I have
the EE edition, and I have ran into the same issue.

No. This is a fresh installation of Win2003 EE and the only things
installed are the latest Windows updates and the cluster is configured
with a shared drive array. I followed the knowledgebase article Q815431
and set up the named pipe alias as instructed. I haven't seen any
articles that say there is anything else required. They all just say to
start the install and choose the Virtual Server option, which I cannot
do.

It's not quite that simple. I suggest installing the client tools somewhere
and reading the BOL section on Failover Clustering. You will need to create
a clustered MSDTC instance that the installer can use or it won't be able to
build a clustered SQL server. Don't forget, you will need at least one
shared disk that is NOT part of the quorum group for a clustered SQL
installation. Make sure the clustered disks can move between nodes.

I should not have to install a clustered MSDTC instance in order to
install a virtual server.

From http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=260758:
----
Question: Is it necessary to configure MSDTC as a clustered resource for
SQL Server clustering to work?

Answer: No. MSDTC is required only if you need the ability to perform
distributed transactions on your cluster. If you intend to use linked
servers or perform replication (snapshot/transactional with
immediate/queued updating subscribers), MSDTC is required. For more
information, see "Distributed Transactions architecture" in SQL Server
2000 Books Online.
----

Is this not correct?

It is correct.

This is not quite correct. Setup does not use MSDTC and MSDTC does not have
to be installed in order to install SQL Server 2000 on a cluster. MSDTC
only needs to be installed if you plan to make use of distributed
transactions.

I stand corrected.
