Default Upgrading Question - 09-21-2004 , 10:50 PM

Hi,

We are in process of upgrading all Win2k boxes with 2 node
clustering which includes SQL server 2000 failover
clustering to Win2k3 2 node clustering. What are the pros
and cons. pls point me to some resources or share your
personal experiences.

Thanks

Chip

Pros:
2003 is simply faster, even on the exact same hardware.
2003 is easily to maintain and support (event logging is much better)

Cons:
Upgrading is a pain, I prefer fresh installs.
SQL 2000 requires at least SP2 or higher for support on 2003, though really
you want 3a to avoid Slammer.

Cheers,

Rod

Make sure you have correct version driver and SAN support software before
starting the upgrade. Your best bet is to do a rolling upgrade of each
node. Once you are satisfied, drop each node out of the cluster one at a
time and do a cold rebuild. After the node is rebuilt, add it back in to
the cluster. That way you get the best of the upgrade vs. install debate.
It is more work, but I think you will have a more stable system at the end.
