Default SQL2K Cluster license cost - 07-08-2003 , 06:51 AM

Hi,
Does someone know the licensing issues with the following configuration:

2 servers ( physical machines ) with 2 micro-processor on each, running
a cluster ( so with WIN2K Advanced Server )

1 or 2 instance(s) of SQL2K Enterprise installed on the cluster ( so
virtual instances are running )

How many WIN2K Advanced server licenses should I buy?
How many SQL2K Enterprise licenses should I buy ?

I've got about 10 clients ( web servers ) of the database. Each running
IIS/ W2K Server . ( does it make a difference? )

I've already got a boxed edition of SQL2K STD Edition. Is there a way to
upgrade?

Thanks

If the secondary node of the cluster is Passive then you will not have to buy a second license for SQL Server 2000 EE.
Here is a section from the Microsoft Whitepaper - Choosing How to License SQL Server
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/licensingwp.asp

In Active-Passive fail-over clustering, only one server is actively
running one or more SQL Server databases or SQL Server-based applications
at any one time. The other acts as a backup server, and is configured such
that if the first server fails, the database(s) or application(s) it is
running will be continued seamlessly by the other. In this scenario, only
the active machine must be licensed. Disaster recovery servers are not
covered by this exception.

The following Microsoft Knowledge base article also has good information

SQL Server 2000 Licensing FAQ

Answer is NO.
