Default RE: SQL Server Named instance with Default Instance - 03-15-2008 , 08:38 PM

There is no issue with mixing a default instance and a named instance in the
same cluster. The question is whether the application needs the compuing
power of an entire node all the time. So if the app is resource intensive and
practically needs all the computing power even after a failover, you probably
should dedicate the cluster to the app.

But as Andrew pointed out, 4GB of RAM these days is too small for the
quad-core CPUs you described. Even on a two socket quad-core server, I'd
start with 16GB or 32GB by default.

Thanks for response Linchi, I see. I read up the requirments for it and they
are a bit demanding. But it doesn't say that I need to dedicate entire
instance to SQL Server. My question is, is it good idea to have default
instance and a name instance running at same time on a Cluster enviornment?

Thanks!

It would be very strange if OCS demands a named instance. But if it wants to
have an instance all to itself (wouldn't be surprised), you may not have a
choice but to install one (assuming that you already have a default instance
installed and the OCS folks don't want to use it.)

Hi Folks,

We are running SQL Server 2005 Cluster enviornment with single
instance-two node configuration. Presently both servers have 4GB ram, with
3.4Ghz 32-bit Quad-Core CPUs on both.

Our Network guys are installing Microsoft OCS 2007, and are demanding
SQL DBA team install named instance on the cluster enviornment. I have
turned them down so far, but wanted to ask everyons opinion on here.

Thanks!

Hi,

Thank-you for the reply Andrew and Linchi. If I do expand the memory
however, I would need to change the CPUs from 32-bit to 64bit no? To be able
to fully address the memory space?

Thanks!
