Default SQL Server Cluster (Licensing Question) - 12-04-2003 , 11:01 AM

I have been searching on MS, but haven't found the answer. I am in the process of setting up a 2 node SQL Cluster (Active/Passive). I know I have to buy 2 licenses of Advanced Server, but I am not sure if I need to purchase 2 licenses of SQL Enterprise Edition and if I need to order twice as many Client Access Licences (CALs) for the users.

Any help is appreciated.

Juan

Hi Juan,

In an active/passive cluster only one SQL Server license is needed for
the active connection. Do you have a Microsoft Sales Rep? You can ask them
what the specific requirements are for your environment, but that's the
general rule.

Check out the following site:

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/faq.asp

The client licenses only apply to the concurrently connected users, so
unless you plan to have more users connected when SQL Server is running on
the passive node than when running on the active node, you should hot have
to purchase additional licenses.
