Default SQL Server Cluster - 10-21-2004 , 09:14 AM

Hi,
I am presently running Windows 2003 cluster with SQL Server 2000. My
question is what is the correct way to apply Critical Updates to a SQL
Cluster?
Thank you in advance for tour assistance!
Bob

Pretty much the same way yo do in a non-clustered environment. I typically
apply the update to an idle node, reboot if necessary, move cluster
resources, repeat as necessary. Of course, it is a good idea to pick low
activity times to shift cluster resources. Sometimes it is necessary to run
host nodes with different elevels of critical updates if you can't move
resources for a while. I have not run into any problems with this.

Thank you, I was dreading the answer on this question. A little mmore
interaction required that I would have liked to see but easy enough to deal
with.

Definitely don't allow the host nodes to download and install by themselves.
Somehow a group policy got applied to our MSMQ cluster hosts that told them
to go full automatic on Windows Updates. Of course, both host nodes
downloaded and applied and rebooted at nearly the same time. No working
host until the reboot finished. Sometimes smart technology can do REALLY
dumb things.

Gotta love it. I love it when things do exactly what you tell them to do.
Whether or not it's the right thing. :-)
