Nope, it doesn't work that way. Service Packs have to be run from the
current host node and always act clusterwide.

Sometimes they end up in a catch-22 situation

I have a SQL Server 2005 on a Windows 2003 failover cluster. Both nods
are without Service Pack and I want to upgrate them to SP2 but I'm not
able to find a guide to understand if i have to run the setup on both
nodes or only on the active one.

You need to install service pack on the passive node ONLY if you have
installed client tools. If you have only database engine services, the
setup performed from the active node will update both nodes

The second question is: after the installation of the Service Pack, if
one node crashes, when I re-join it to the cluster, do I have to
reinstall SQL 2005 plus Service Pack 2 on this node or only SQL 2005?

If you rejoin the same node (without format it before rejoin) you don't
need to apply service pack. If you rebuild the node from scratch or if you
remove SQL Server from it, you have to reinstall SQL Server and then apply
service pack to it. The procedure is described in the following page of
BOL

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191545.aspx

In this case could be possible that you have to follow the steps described
here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934749/en-us

in order to apply the service pack

Thanks

Ciao
