Default SQL Cluster SQL SP3a install fails - 01-06-2004 , 02:15 PM

We have an active-passive MSCS Sql cluster. The systems are running MS Win2k
SP3. We are currently at MS SQL SP1. I try to install SQL SP3a and it seems
to go ok and after a long wait and it seems near the very end I get an error
stating installation failed.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated!

An error I have encountered are services that are set to
use an account with admin rights. The service pack update
tries to restart SQL Server in single user mode and the
service account has a tendency to "slip in" before the
service pack install progam when SQL Server comes online
again. (Single user is a "first come first served" basis)

Temporary disabling these services solves the issue.

Chris,

You will need to look at the sqlsp.log file (created on the node where you
started your SP3 setup). From that file you will understand where the
failure occurred. Depending on that you will need to review the appropriate
file. Cor ex. if the error occured on your secondary node, you will have to
review sqlspN.log (where N is an integer) on the secondary node and see the
error message.

For additional information on troubleshooting, please review

Server and Service Pack Setups for Failover Clustering

This webcast will not resolve your issue but will get you started on the
right track.
