I think you are missing a key element. When you install SQL, you add the
node to the Instance's allowed nodes. You cannot install SQL then join the
cluster or join the virtual instance. If you install SQL outside of the
cluster, you are doing it as a local install only. Patches are applied
cluster-wide which is where the original problem came from.
