Thanks much for the fast answer.
But then I don't understand exactly how I will benefit from the cluster
if I need to setup a domain controller.
Can I configure the domain controller on the same cluster? Or else
should I go for a second cluster just to run the domain controller (
looks awfully expensive : 2 more licenses of Win2K Advanced Server for
this!??)

Hi,
I'm completely new to clustering. I'm gathering informations about
what's possible with clustering win2k + sql2k, and I'd to know if:
a) Is it possible to set up clustering without using
Domain ( I'd like
to NOT use the AD stuff etc. Just work on workgroup )
Nope. Clustering requires an external domain
authentication mechanism. NT4
or AD works fine, but you MUST have one of them.

b) We would like to use the cluster for a transactional replication
publisher. Is there any issue with this?
Works just fine for me.

c)Does the following configuration make sense:
Cluster with 2 servers, SRV_A and SRV_B
SRV_A runs a publisher
SRV_B runs a distributor
Yes.

Domains usually run on a distributed system of multiple controllers. Any
single one can usually sustain the load for a small (<1000 computer)
network.

Active Directory controllers can be regular Windows Server 2000 systems.
They do not have to be Advanced Server. AD controllers cannot be clustered.
It is a very bad idea to run a host as a SQL server and an AD controller.

Active Directory is something that should be planned carefully, not just
thrown together to support another project. Without careful planning, you
will lose the high availability benefits of clustering.

As Geoff said, you can also use an NT4 domain, so if you want a quick and
cheap network and if you can get a copy of NT4 Server, all you need is an
old pc or two and you can have a domain. Do not use the Sql cluster to host
the domain.
The more stability, redundancy, security, speed, etc that you need, the
better hardware/software you will want for your domain. He also makes a
good point that planning is very important should you decide to go with AD.
