Cluster Nodes and Windows Domains

All nodes in the cluster must be members of the same domain and able to
access a domain controller and a Domain Name System (DNS) server, as well as
a WINS server. The nodes should not be configured as domain controllers if
you are going to install SQL Server, as you may encounter some problems,
including the fact that domain controller functionality (such as Active
Directory) is not cluster aware, so all information will be local. This
impacts things such as a directory enabled program's ability to publish
under the virtual server's computer object, which does not work in a
cluster. A WINS server is still required for Windows 2000/SQL Server 2000 in
a clustered environment if name resolution of virtual resource is required.

Question: Does "dcpromo" work on an MSCSed cluster? or Does MSCS
installation fail on a PDC/BDC? or Does it error out when installing the SQL
server on a node with Active Directory & MSCS installed?

DCPROMO works, but is usually not needed on a clustered node. Most don't run
applications on Domain Controllers. Exchange 2033 for example is not even
supported on a Clustered DC.

MSCS will work on a DC (PDC/BDC is not 4.0, please don't go there). Again,
but why? Keep the DC's separate, with two they will be Highly Available.

SQL Server 2000 will install and run on a 2000/2003 DC clustered node. But,
again if care about SQL, DON'T DO THIS.

If it is recommended, does Microsoft support such configuration, if there are problems for troubleshooting?

Yes they support it (unless you are running Exchange 2003 on the DC
Clustered node). But again, I really don't see the need since the standard
DC configuration is robust enough without adding clustering. Sure, cluster
SQL, great idea. Just leave the DCs on standard machines.

Just my two cents...

Anything improperly configured is a potential security hole. DNS is not a
bad thing, but it is not cluster aware. So, I would not install DNS on a
cluster.

We are a consolidation company with Unisys ES7000s (32 processor systems)

Please let me know if DNS makes a security hole.
