Brandon,

From 254321 INF: Clustered SQL Server Do's, Don'ts, and Basic Warnings
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=254321

SQL Server 6.5 and SQL Server 7.0 Virtual Servers

To start or stop SQL Server, SQL Server Executive, or SQL Agent services
from a SQL Server 6.5 or SQL Server 7.0 virtual server, you must use the
Microsoft Cluster Administrator or the Cluster.exe command line tool.

If you attempt to start or stop services in any other way (for instance,
from Control Panel, SQL Service Manager, or SQL Enterprise Manager), the
registry may be corrupted, and you may need to uncluster or completely
reinstall SQL Server.

Snip of Header Stuff

I am running an sql 7.0 server on 2 nt 4.0 servers in a
cluster. One of are developers shut down/restarted the sql
server service and sql server agent service with the
service applet in the control panel. Since then the
cluster service fails on both the SQL server and the SQL
server agent resources. I have to maually start the named
instances for the database to run, but I do not have
failover. It looks like the default instances start when
ever we switch to another server. Does any one have
information on how to get my named instance to start
instead of the default SQL instance.

Thanks,
