Your plan will work just fine.

Cheers,

Hello.

I was given the task to cluster our existing standalone W2K SQL server.

I've purchase a new server from Dell along with an external SCSI array
plus
2 SQL2K Enterprise and 2 W2K Advanced CDs for both servers in my future
cluster.

We have an existing W2K SQL Standard running on a W2K server (not
Advanced).
I purchased an extra SCSI controller for the existing SQL server and all
is
well as far as seeing the SCSI Array.

I followed the Microsoft online instructions for setting up the config and
after a few problems that I worked out I'm good to go.
I'm currently installing SQL2K Enterprise on the new server W2K Adv
(Node1)
when I realized I'm not sure I can do what I want to.

My plan was to set Node1 up exactly the right way with SQL2k Enterprise
and
then transfer all my databases from the old (primitive) SQL server and
have
Node1 be my primary SQL server.

THEN I want to wipe out my old SQL server and reinstall
Advanced/Enterprise
and join it to the cluster as Node2.

Is this possible?

Right now I'm at the SQL install where it asks me "Cluster definition"
The only configured nodes it sees is Node1 (obviously).

Can I continue and follow my original plan or am I screwed?

Thanks in advance.
And any additional tips would be most welcome!

T.A.

One thing you should be aware of. This may work but it is not a supported
configuration. Microsoft will only support SQL Server on a cluster if the
hardware is sold as a cluster configuration.

No SPacks on SQL? Ever heard of Slammer? I would say make sure you have a
good backup and apply them!

I hope so!

One more "little thing".

Currently our SQL2K has been running flawlessly with *no* service pack
installed.
Are any SPs required to make clustering work?
Or rather, are there any know bugs in SQL Enterprise that need a SP?

Our SQL use, though critical in its production use, is very basic.
I'm in the "if-it-aint-broken-don't-fix-it" camp.

TIA.
