Default Multiple IP Addresses ? - 12-11-2003 , 04:21 PM

hello all
Can I add another IP address resource to a clustered SQL 2000 virtual server
so that it can listen on two addresses ?
Thanks
Alice

Yes.

244980 HOW TO: Change the Network IP Addresses of SQL Server Virtual Servers
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=244980

Assign only one IP address for each network and one network for
each network adapter. SQLServer requires that each IP address that is
assigned to it have its own unique subnet
mask. SQL Server does not support multiple IP addresses on the same subnet.

You're welcome. This is the number 1 misconfigured item, when we've

Kevin;

Why doesn't SQL Server support multiple IP addresses on
the same subnet? What are the specific reasons?

The reason for having multiple IPs and subnets is so that clients on
separate networks can connect to the same sql server, they will each know
it by the same name but not by the same IP address.

It's not for availability reasons per say. The network name depends on all
IPs. If any of them fails, the whole SQL group will fail over.

Kevin;

My question was not about why SQL SErver listens on
multiple IPs. My question was: why does SQL Server insist
that these multiple IPs have to be on different subnets?

That was a design decision. I'll see if I can get more details why.

Question :
"My question was not about why SQL SErver listens on
multiple IPs. My question was: why does SQL Server insist
that these multiple IPs have to be on different subnets?"

Answer:
The reason is that you cannot create 2 ips for the same net name on the
same subnet otherwise you would get a duplicate name on the network

Kevin;

Why do I need to specify the same net name? Why can't I
specify a different net name for each IP?
