Default Master Rebuild Failed - 01-08-2004 , 08:52 AM

I have a SQL 2000 SP3 virtual database sitting on a pair
of W2K Adv Servers SP3.

One of the disks failed that held the master database.

I ran the Rebuildm utility as per KB-298568 and the LDF
and NDF files are copied to the hard drive, and the
configuration blue bar goes across the screen 4 times.

The Error "Rebuild master failed with error -1" then
appears.

Cannot start the SQL Service. I have tried running the
rebuildm utility several times now with the same error -
please help!!

See:
273572 BUG: Rebuildm.exe Utility Stops Responding When Source Directory is
on a
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=273572

WORKAROUND
==========

Copy the entire \x86\data folder from the CD-ROM share to the network, and
then use the
network as the source directory for data files. Remove the Read-only
attribute
on all directories and files in the share. To do this, perform a search
of the
share by using *.*. Right-click to select all the returned files, click
Properties, and then clear the Read-only check box.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server
2000.
