Default Large 24/7/365 Web Site Planning - 02-09-2004 , 09:48 AM

Hi. I posted the message below in microsoft.public.sqlserver.setup &
microsoft.public.windows.server.setup and was advised to also post here.

-----------------------------

I'm in the initial planning stage of a web site that is expected to grow to
many users and a lot of data in SQL Server 2000. 24/7/365 is a requirement
and the plans are to have two physical sites. I know that Windows Server
2003 and SQL Server 2000 can be set up for high reliability and scalability.
What are some good resources to start figuring out exactly how to do it?

Thanks.

People posted these links. Are there other good resources for planning
exactly how to scale? Thanks!

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 High Availability

Definitely a good resource. Kimberly Tripp teaches an excellent High
Availability SQL class. She also has good material on performance tuning
databasesThis book will get you looking and thinking in the right direction.
And yes, you can put SQL in the middle of a very large and highly available
website.

Take a look at the MS SQL security white papers

There are some good tips on the following site

BTW, When we wrote the book, we realized it would be tough
since there's so much material to cover, Some topics
(such as monitoring) are books unto themselves, but I
think you'd find it a good way to start wrapping your head
around the complexities of HA and DR, and then bubble it
up to where it includes all the servers in your solution
and not just SQL Server.

I design large, mission-critical HA solutions for clients
for SQL Server-based solutions all the time, and it's
definitely possible, but it takes as much effort as it
does for every other type of system. There is no one
right answer for everyone. Your solution despite the
technologies used will be unique due to its own SLAs,
backup requirements, disk needs, budget, etc.

The HA class is one that was originally developed at MS -
good stuff.
