Instances not advertising on W2K3 & SQL2000 active / act -

Can someone help?
I have a cluster based on 2003 with SQL 2000 sp3a running active /
active currently with 2 named instances on each node. The instances
are not advertising themselves so we cannot connect without setting up
a client alias that includes the port number. This seems to be
causing some issues with various applications and seems to be contray
to how I have read / been told it should work.
Can anyone shed any light?
Thanks,
digger
