Default how many servernames/clusternames - 02-19-2004 , 04:38 PM

Setting up a 2 node cluster with SQL 2K on Win2k3.

How many servernames/clusternames(virtual servernames) do I need ?

Upon setting up with windows clustering MSCS , i need to create a virtual
name right and have a virtual IP ?

Do I also have to create another virtual name and another virtual IP for SQL
or can i use the same name and IP that i have used for Windows ?

Thanks

Hi Hassan,

You will need one machine name for each node. You will need one name for
the cluster resource. You will need one name for each SQL Server
installation in the cluster.

You are correct that the cluster requires a virtual name and its own IP
address. It will also require a disk resource for the quorum.

SQL Server will be part of a different cluster group. SQL needs a separate
IP address and virtual server name, plus its own disk resource(s).

Hi Hassan,

I'm working the night shift this month :-) When the support phone lines
aren't busy, I have time to respond to newsgroup posts. I'm on the east
coast of the US.
