Default Help Setting up SQL 2005 in a Windows 2008 Cluster in a multi site - 03-06-2009 , 09:12 AM

Here is what I would like to do...
I have a Windows 2008 64 bit server attached to a SAN in one location (corp
office.)
I have another Windows 2008 64 bit server attached to a different SAN in a
Different location (DR Site.)The two locations are connected together via a 1
gigabit fibre connection.
The servers are on the same VLan 10.8.25.0/24 (for example)
I want to install SQL 2005 64 bit into the cluster.
I have the Windows 2008 failover cluster feature installed on both servers,
but not sure what to do after that. I want to setup a active/passive cluster
where the active will run at the corp office. This way if the server fails at
my corp office, the server at the DR site will take over & the end users will
be up and running. I am not sure what Quorum to use in the Cluster or how to
get the data replicated.
I have tried to find some white papers online, but came up empty.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Jason

You have to talk to your storage and network vendors to make multi-site
work. SQL 2005 and 2008 do not support multi-site without using a VLAN.
There are also pretty strict network latency requirements across the nodes.

Please don't worry about the latency. We are using a VLAN as stated earlier.
Actually we have an Exchange 2007 CCR Cluster setup the same way I want to
setup this SQL cluster. So the network between sites has been thoroughly
tested w/ the Exchange cluster. I am confident the network will be fine for
this SQL project.

Are there any support documents that tells me what I need to do for this
setup?

Thanks.

Now you are down to the storage vendor.

See if any of these help:

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...Clustering.doc

Using same SAN as in the Exchange project. I consulted my vendor, they say it
will be fine.
Neither link will help. 2nd link is broken. Sorry.
Is there nobody else trying to setup SQL 2005 on Windows 2008 in this type
of cluster config? I would think there would be a white paper for this.

Here is the "gotcha" list. Avoid these and you will be fine.

Ok Geoff, I got you; there are no support documents out right now.
Thanks anyways.
