Default Dump/Backup Disk resource dependency - 09-30-2009 , 06:29 PM

I have a 2 node (A/P) SQL Server 2005 cluster setup with a disk resource
solely used for backup process. This resource is currently a dependency of
SQL Server resource. I know normal data/log disk resources need to be listed
as depencies to SQL Server, but does one used only for backups/dumps need to
be in there? Or is it okay to leave there and make sure affect groups option
is off? Recently the backup disk went offline and brought down SQL Server
and I am trying to avoid that in the future.

Any ideas are welcome..
Thanks.

It Depends (tm).

I normally backup to a UNC share (although I am warming up to DPM). The UNC
share is OFF of the cluster but it may be on a cluster of its own.

The dependency is only necessary if you put database files on the disk
resource. Given the principles of clustering, you don't want any
dependency that is not essential to the normal operation of the cluster.
