Default crossover vs switch for heartbeat - 10-23-2009 , 12:33 PM

We are a SQL 2008 std 64 bit on windows 2008 enterprise 64 bit shop and use
two node active passive clustering. Currently our heartbeat network is a
switch. Since it is only a two-node cluster, we are thinking about using a
crossover cable instead to free up the switch for something else. All the ip
address scheme will remain the same and no work is needed. I like to know if
there is a problem that I don't see.

Lots of people use a cross over cable for the heartbeat. It shouldn't be an
issue.

...Yeah we've happily used crossover on our two-nodes.

I think you could probably argue that the chance of failure on the cable is
a lot less than the switch too for various reasons such as:-
No power required
cable is pretty resiliant
less components and complexity.

Its not a big deal to upgrade to a switch at a later stage if you go for
more nodes...
