Default Clustering 2005 SQL server using hyper v - 01-16-2009 , 11:54 AM

Hi guys,
I am wondering if someone could clear up some information for me.
I am in the midst of changing our network environment to virtual and have
setup a cluster with 2 poweredge nodes and iSCSI SAN. I would like to have 2
sql servers in passive\active configuration for fault tolerance, so that if
the first one fails, second one kicks in soon after. I have exposed qourum
and virtual disk to both servers. Do i have to expose one more virtual disk
and have one sql server on 1LUN and second sql on 2LUN? I am in the midst of
testing this out and would appreciate any help in regards to that.

Thanks for the information, that cleared up some confusion for me. I have
another one for you if you don't mind.
Let's say I have those 5 LUNs exposed to both systems. I would be then able
to install enterprise server on one of the nodes and put sql server on it.
How would I go abouts installing the second sql server for the cluster? Does
it mean that both of the sql server VMs will be pointing to the same LUNs for
the operating system files as well as database? Is there any additional
configuration on the actual sql server vms?

Sucess,
I guess I should have tested this before posing my last question. I have
sucessfully build my sql cluster and tested failover from one server to
another.
Thank you for your time Ole Kristian as you guided my in the right direction.
Cheers

There are two ways to cluster. In Hyper-V, the proper way is to cluster
Hyper-V and its elements and let that cover for each guest. The other way
is to cluster guest OSs within the overall Hyper-V environment, but that
quickly becomes pointlesss except for testing cluster behavior.

I have another question in regards to Hyper V and SQL server 2005 clustering.
I have tested failover clustering and was sucessful to failover the virtual
machine from one node to another. How would I go abouts configuring SQL
server so that it knows it's being used by the cluster and so that it fails
over properly if one of the nodes is physcially shut down. If I don't fail
over the machine prior to shut down the sql server virtual machine shuts down
by itself.

That is precisely why you cluster the Hyper-V hosts and not the guest OS
systems.
