Default Clustered Hardware - 12-29-2003 , 09:15 AM

At current we have a 2 node clustered environment. We
have 4 procs and 5 GB of ram in each physical box. If we
upgrade the primary node to 10 GB of RAM do we also need
to upgrade the second node? If we do upgrade to 10 GB
does anyone have any memory setting recomendations?

TIA
Rob

Is it an Active / Active cluster or Active / Passive? If it's A/A or
Multi-Instance you need to worry about what happens when it fails over and
you need to share the ram between the two instances. Since you would be
using AWE you have to be careful as it is a fixed amount of ram and the
first one to come up will get what it wants and may not leave enough for the
second instance.

It is an active / active cluster. since they are on
seperate phyiscal boxes then how would you share the
memory?

Well that's hard to answer as I know nothing of your situation. How much
memory does each Instance need to operate properly? How are you currently
setting the memory? The machine with 10GB will not be as much a problem
when the other node fails over to it but if that node fails to the one with
only 5GB you have to make sure each Instance has enough to work with.
Chances are you may not be using AWE for one or both instances but how will
that change when you add 10GB? What is the reasoning for only adding it to
one node?

To simplify the handling of failover scenarios, you really
should make sure that the hardware configurations,
including the memory configuration, of the two nodes is
identical.

I agree with Andrew. Without knowing your environment, its difficult to
give suggestion.
