You get one named instance per cluster.

You can make a local instance non-default or default (if there is no default
clustered instance.

Each server will have a unique IP address/Port combination that is
abstracted to a network name.

Mirroring requires a witness. In a cluster, the quorum disk prevents
"split-brain" cluster problems so no witness is required.

Thanks for the speedy response. That was fast. In the unadvisable
scenerio described above, clients would connect to clstr1\production
clustered instance. If I wanted to point to my non-clustered instance
on the failover node I would connect to the default (non-clustered)
instance...whatever the name might be, right? I'm inclined to follow
your recommendations (and my gut) at this point but when challenged I
want to be as knowledgeable as possible.

On another subject: for the automatic failover, I would need a witness
server, right? Could this witness be performing other tasks or should
it be a box that is dedicated to its task of being a witness and
polling the cluster?

Thanks, again.
