Default Cluster Monitoring Questions - 01-07-2004 , 10:01 AM

Hi Gurus

I am going to take over a SQL 2k cluster with Win 2k on Compaq SA
(active/passive). I would like to know if there is any difference as regard
to the monitoring of CPU, Disk and Memory etc.? Can I use window
performance monitor as I usually do with standalone SQL 2k installations
any thing I need to be very careful of
Thank you very much

Bria

You do need to be aware of which node the SQL instance is
running and use the performance metrics from that node. If
the instance had a failover, you need to be aware of the
failover and check both nodes.

In addition to monitoring the performance metrics similar
to what you would monitor on a standalone box, I'd suggest
you also monitor the behavior of your cluster. As a DBA,
you really should be aware of such things as:

* On which node is the instance running?
* The passive node has failed.
* The group is not running on its preferred node.
* There was a failover of the group from node A to node B.

You can connect to the virtual server name for the Performance counters
rather than the host node name.

Otherwise, Linchi is absolutely correct.

Hi Brian,

if your SAN is running properly, you will not recognize, that you are using a SAN. Monitoring etc. is the same as at an local SQL 2k Cluster. You only got a problem, if you lost your quorum-Disk, then you have to look at kb, there are good articles for solving this.
