Default cannot bind SQL IP to ClusterIP - 4 IPs in use!? - 12-04-2003 , 05:34 PM

Hi

i have installed our new Failover Cluster, based on Windows 2003 and SQL
2000 SP3. This looks like

CLUSTERSRV1 - 10.1.1.1 (Active)
CLUSTERSRV2 - 10.1.1.2 (Passiv)

CLUSTER1 - 10.1.1.3 (Cluster IP)

SQLCLUSTER - 10.1.1.4 (SQL Server)

I wonder myself why it is not possible to bound the SQL Server virtual IP to
the Cluster IP!? Are you able to explain me why this is not possible or
what's my fault!? I cannot see any sense in this...

Greetings
Alex

The only IPs the SQL server is going to answer to is the current active
cluster side and the virtual SQL cluster IP, iehter and passive and cluster
ip the ports that sql listen to will not be open nor listen on those
interfaces.

hi

you don't answer my question.

why is it not possible to tell SQL you are running on 10.1.1.3 ? setup tells
me everytime the ip is in use.

CLUSTERSRV1 - 10.1.1.1 (Active)
CLUSTERSRV2 - 10.1.1.2 (Passiv)
CLUSTER1 - 10.1.1.3 (Cluster IP)
SQLCLUSTER - 10.1.1.4 (SQL Server)

Hi, you canīt bond Cluster IP address to SQL Server IP
address, because SQL Server Cluster need to have his own
virtual Server.

That's windows cluster ip. Sqlserver cluster requires another ip other than
the windows ip. This is by design.

Polyserve has a new Sql solution that just use only 3 IPs (2 for each
physical node, 1 for mxs). More info at http://www.polyserve.com
