I backup data across the network to a UNC share. I use a specific share per
system, but may or may not have multiple shares on the same underlying
physical storage. I find it completely unnecessary to use expensive SAN
storage for backups. I use fast SCSI disks at a much lower cost per nByte.

We have a cluster setup using 5 servers and 3 environment
(PRD, QAT and DEV): PRD1, PRD2, QAT1, QAT2, DEV1. All
servers are running Windows 2003. We currently have 260
GB of available space and we want to carve out partitions
for the servers. We will be creating separate partitions
for each of the five servers, with a separate DATA and LOG
partition. BUT, my question is regarding a BACKUP logical
drive. Is it a good idea to create a single logical
backup drive that all 5 servers can share, or should we
just backup our databases locally to the DATA drives? |
